by Greg Dunn and Brian Edwards

These are highly specialized, machine made “prints” of Action Potential that retain the brilliant animated reflective effects of microetchings while being offered at a more affordable price. The pieces have aluminum evaporated onto them to yield a highly reflective surface (thus under white light they appear silver, not gold), and are then sealed between sheets of glass to isolate them from their environment and preserve them. Microetched prints arrive framed in a simple black frame, ready to hang. Microetched prints do not come with their own lighting. I will provide ample documentation, advice, and product suggestions on how best to illuminate them.

You will notice that I am selling both pristine and slightly damaged prints- I had a few of them lightly dinged by shipping from my metallizer. These are being sold at a discount. When I say slightly damaged, I mean that- I am really anal retentive about what I release, and none of these have distracting flaws. They are either a small crease or dimple that oftentimes takes me a minute to find again even when I know what I’m looking for. Anything with obvious or distracting flaws is thrown out, and none of these prints when illuminated properly look anything less than great. In any case, you will have the option of purchasing a pristine or a slightly damaged print from the drop down menu.
Prints will come in a simple black frame and can be shipped internationally. If you are interested in the frame in the image attached to this email instead of a simple black one, email me after you place your order and we can arrange for that. It is an extra $180. Note that the frame in the main image on the page is with this deluxe version.

About Action Potential

The triggering of an action potential is one of the foundational principles on which the brain operates. Action Potential is an animated microetching that simulates how a neuron receives and integrates incoming signals from connected neurons to trigger an action potential. Incoming action potentials from the small neurons hit the dendrites of the large neuron while their collective input builds through the large neuron’s dendrites. When these signals simultaneously reach the cell body, they trigger the large neuron to fire its own action potential. While this piece is a study of how input velocities, locations, and relative strengths influence a downstream neuron’s ability to fire, it is also an artistic experiment exploring the explosive beauty of the process. Action potentials are the fundamental processes by which we think, feel, taste, and accomplish every task our brain carries out.

International Shipping information:

Please note – Due to COVID-19 shipping has been slow.  I am working mostly myself to prep all shipping and in general transit times have been taking a lot longer.  Please be patient and contact me if you have questions about shipping. Also, I am now able to ship framed prints overseas, but the cost of shipping can be as high as $350-400 for Australia (Europe is more like $250, Canada $150-$200). If you order from overseas I may need to bill you extra for shipping as this is a specialized shipping category outside the abilities of my current software.

Additional information on lighting, etc.

Both 22K original microetchings and microetched prints can appear dramatically different depending on how they are lit, and below are a series of still images demonstrating suggested illumination patterns. In these images, the colors encode information about relative locations of the synapses relative to the cell body. For example, the more proximal gold colored synapses may be contributing to a greater degree to the signal integration, whereas the more distant pink synapses may be contributing a weaker signal.

Please read this .pdf for detailed information and product recommendations on how to light your microetching.

This video below also explains in detail how to get the most out of your etching.
